Start with the monuments

The Paris you already have a picture of.

The Louvre, the Tower, a cruise down the Seine, the palace at Versailles, the hill at Montmartre. The handful of sights every first trip is built around — and the smartest way to book each one.

Out on the Seine

The Seine decides how you see Paris.

All Seine cruises →
★★★★★★★★★★4.4· 22,721 travellers on the busiest Seine boat

A one-hour sightseeing loop past the Tower and Notre-Dame, a long dinner cruise with the city lit up, or an after-dark run when the monuments switch on. Three very different evenings — here is which fare earns it.

The one-hour loop

Sightseeing cruise, Tower to Notre-Dame

1h· from $18· hop-on options

The cheapest way to see half of Paris. Open-top boats leave every twenty minutes from the foot of the Eiffel Tower; the commentary points out the bridges you would otherwise walk straight past.

The long dinner

Dinner cruise with the city lit

2–3h· from $90· window seats

Three courses while the Louvre, the Conciergerie and the Tower slide past the glass. Book a window table and the later departure so the monuments come on over dessert.

After dark

Evening cruise when the Tower sparkles

1h· from $20· hourly sparkle

The Eiffel Tower breaks into five minutes of sparkle at the top of every hour after dusk, and the best seat for it is mid-river. Short, cheap, and the photo everyone comes home with.

Montmartre

Montmartre is the village Paris kept.

The last working vineyard in the city, the painters’ square, the white domes of Sacré-Cœur floating over the rooftops. Come before the funicular fills and let a guide find the lanes the crowds walk straight past.

Outside the Périphérique

The best of France is a day trip from Paris.

A fast train and a good guide put Versailles, Monet’s garden, the Normandy beaches and the Champagne cellars all within a single day. Leave the logistics to the tour and keep the window seat for the daydreaming.

Paris alone

Things you can only do in Paris.

Museums and river cruises you can find in a dozen cities. The catacombs, the cabaret and a top-down spin in a 1960s Citroën belong to Paris alone.

Six storeys down

The Catacombs

Beneath the 14th arrondissement, the bones of six million Parisians line two kilometres of tunnel, stacked into walls of skulls and femurs in the 1780s when the old graveyards overflowed. Only a fraction is open, entry is timed, and the daily cap is small — a reserved slot is the difference between walking in and being turned away at the door.

The Vintage 2CV

Nothing else looks so Parisian as bouncing past the Arc de Triomphe in a canvas-topped Citroën 2CV with a driver in a striped shirt at the wheel. The little cars were designed for French farmers in the 1940s; today they run private one- and two-hour spins through Montmartre, along the Seine and out to the Tower, usually with a glass of something on board.

The Moulin Rouge

The red windmill in Pigalle has run the same formula for more than a century: feathers, sequins, the French cancan and a great deal of Champagne. Tables sell by tier, and the earlier show is the one to book — the late seating fills months ahead, and the front tables put you close enough to feel the kick line.

Louvre and Eiffel slots go first

Some of Paris sells out before you land.

Most of Paris you can arrange from the hotel the night before. Not these. They run on timed tickets, daily caps and shows that sell out weeks ahead — walk-ups get turned away at the door.

  1. 01Louvre Museum Timed-Entrance TicketThe Louvre’s timed-entry slots sell out days ahead in season, and the walk-up queue can run past two hours — a reserved time is the whole game.
  2. 02Moulin Rouge Cabaret Show Ticket with ChampagneThe good tables at the Moulin Rouge go weeks in advance and the early show sells first. There is no last-minute door price worth having.
  3. 03Catacombs Entry & Seine River Cruise with Audio GuideOnly a few hundred people go underground each day and the timed tickets vanish fast — arrive without one and you will not get in.
  4. 04Eiffel Tower Summit or Second Floor AccessSummit lifts run on a fixed daily quota; once they are gone you climb only to the second floor. Reserve the summit slot before you leave home.
Wet-weather Paris

Paris saves its best rooms for rainy days.

Paris does grey skies for weeks at a stretch, and the city is built for it. A cooking class with a chef, a macaron workshop, a wine-and-cheese cellar, a guided hour in the Louvre — not one of them cares what the sky is doing.
